At the outset the National Secretary of the Savisthri
Movement explained her views regarding the womens’ proposals for the betterment
of the country ie. to effect a change by eradicating the sad plight of the
women at village, urban levels especially the pressurized women in the North
and the East of Sri Lanka. During the past several years violence reigned in
the country and even in the aftermath of the 30 year old war between the Government
forces and the rebel groups, people suffered immensely especially the women in
the North and the East. They have been greatly
inconvenienced and pressurised and hence the submission of the womens’ document
to substantiate the rights of the women and effect a better change.
The proposals include the escalation of the womens’ representation
by 25% in the parliment and the local government institutions, appointment of
an Independent Womens’ Commission, formulation of economic, Social and
political policies for the increase in womens representatives, to effect electoral
reforms and formulation of a programme to get the corporation of the citizens to
strengthen the village constitution for
the protection of the independence of the Judiciary
